Styes

A stye, also known as a hordeolum, is a common eyelid disorder. It is an acute infection that causes a painful lump near the edge of the eyelid that often resembles a pimple. Styes are caused by bacterial infections of the glands surrounding the eye.

There are many ways to prevent eylid styes from developing. Some of them are as follows: avoid touching or rubbing eyes, wash hands prior to putting in contacts, and avoid sharing eye makeup.

Styes will often heal within a few days on their own, but there are simple treatments (such as warm compresses for 10-15 mins) that may aid in the process. Please remember that styes should never be popped, as this may cause more harm than good.

If you have frequent styes please schedule an eye exam at one of our two locations today!
